scotch-pine.jpg

Scotch pine essential oil is steam distilled from the needles and cones of a conifer which grows up to 40m tall, all over Europe. The best quality of these comes from Tyrol, Austria. Of around 80 species of pine, Scotch pine is the most useful for aromatherapy. Scotch pine essential oil is a clear, runny liquid with a characteristic refreshing, balsamic pine aroma.

Its main actions are as an antimicrobial, expectorant and adrenal stimulant. *See below for meanings.

Scotch pine essential oil is a general tonic for the respiratory system, in particular it's extremely beneficial for clearing cold phlegm from the lungs, and is also helpful for sinus, bronchial congestion, coughs, asthma, bronchitis, chills, fevers and sore throats, especially when partnered with other antimicrobial oils. It also makes an effective air antiseptic in combination with eucalyptus and lemon.

For the musculoskeletal system it can be used in a liniment for the relief of rheumatism, arthritis, gout, sciatica and muscular aches and pains.

Scotch pine is also considered a tonic to the nervous system, and Gabrielle Mojay recommends it as being just as effective as rosemary and thyme to combat fatigue and nervous exhaustion. It's also a great choice for convalescence or following illness which results in the individual feeling weak or stressed psychologically. Kurt Schnaubelt recommends it as an adrenal stimulant, and suggests topical use over the kidney area for adrenal support.

For the urinary system, scotch pine is beneficial when used to treat cystitis and pyelitis.

It's helpful for reproductive system conditions such as prostate problems, sexual fatigue and congestion - the latter suggests it would be helpful for women during menstruation.

For the digestive system, Scotch pine helps ease nausea, aids the treatment of hepatitis through supporting the liver, and is also beneficial for the gall bladder.

Scotch pine essential oil aids the cardiovascular system: it's stimulating/warming for the circulation, raises blood pressure and is a lymphatic decongestant.

Scotch pine warms, revives, clears and helps to decongest numerous systems within the body. It helps people who take on responsibility for the actions and sufferings of others, as well as themselves, and helps to restore self-confidence and positivity, encouraging self-acceptance and discouraging unnecessary guilt. Scotch pine can help to bring an uncompromising will to live, endurance and strength. It's beneficial for the conformist, to help them break free and inspire courage, perserverance, self-confidence and patience. It's also useful as a room clearer, for mediation and/or clinic rooms which natural therapists see their clients in.

Non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitising. *Scotch pine is the safest pine oil to use in aromatherapy.

Blends well with other medicinal oils such as eucalyptus, tea tree and manuka, citruses, lavenders and wood oils.
