Lavender True is steam distilled from the flowering tops of an aromatic evergreen sub-shrub which grows up to 0.9m high. It is native to the mediterranean region, and is mainly produced in Bulgaria and France (France is said to grow a better quality oil). Lavender grown at a higher altitude (600-1500m) is reputed to be the best quality. It is one of the most commonly adulterated oils (other oils or ingredients are added). This cheapens the oil and lessens its' therapeutic value). The oil is clear or pale yellow in colour, with a fresh, herbaceous, floral, woody fragrance.
It's important to remember there are different varieties of Lavender oil. These vary in chemical makeup and the ways they can/should be used. These are: lavandula angustifolia (lavender true), lavandula latifolia (spike lavender), lavandula x intermedia (lavandin) and lavandula stoechas (maritime lavender).
The main actions of Lavender True are as an analgesic, antispasmodic, antimicrobial, cicatrisant, hypotensive, nervine, sedative and vulnerary. * See below for meanings.
